Path of Exile 2's 0.3.1 Update Changes the Endgame for Good

2025.10.15

Path of Exile 2 recently received a huge update from Grinding Gear Games that completely changes the endgame system. The patch overhauls PoE 2 map progression, rebalances modifiers, and completely reshapes the pacing of the Atlas. It's a bit more than just balance tweaks; the whole flow of the game got cleaner, faster, and far less messy.

The most noticeable change is the removal of towers. They were once a core part of spreading modifiers across maps, but that system's gone. In their place are precursor tablets, which can be slotted directly into the map device before starting a run. Each tablet has limited charges and can apply up to three modifiers, depending on what the map already has. When it runs out, it's done. The process is faster, simpler, and way less cluttered than before.

Even with fewer total modifiers, each one now has more weight. Maps are stronger and more focused instead of overloaded with random noise. Random encounters can appear mid-run, breaking up the grind and keeping things unpredictable. Citadels show up far more often, and every single map now ends with a boss fight. That change alone fixes one of the longest-running issues: the awkward empty cleanup after clearing a map.

Early PoE 2 mapping also got a big tune-up. Lower-tier PoE maps have roughly one-third fewer enemies, while higher tiers get their density ramped back up. Packs are smaller and better spaced, which makes fights smoother and more tactical. The days of running into giant, messy clumps of monsters are mostly gone, and open areas finally have a natural flow from one fight to the next.

Some of the most annoying map modifiers have been toned down too. Ground effects for shock, chill, and burn now take up less space—especially in lower-tier PoE maps—giving movement-focused builds more breathing room. A few of the biggest map layouts have been trimmed to remove long, empty stretches, which cuts down on downtime and keeps players fighting instead of jogging.

There are also plenty of quality-of-life improvements sprinkled throughout. You can now use PoE 2 Orb of Alchemy on magic PoE items, which added flexibility for crafting. The stash and merchant menus remember your last search term, which saves a few clicks between runs. PoE 2 item and skill tooltips have been rewritten for clarity, and a small touch of story flavor has been added: Jacob, the town crier, now shows up in Kingsmarch to comment on your progress in act four.

The update doesn't reinvent Path of Exile 2, but it polishes its foundation in all the right ways. Maps system got tighter, faster, and more rewarding to play. The grind still exists—this is PoE, after all—but the loop is way smoother and better thought out. For a game still in early access, this patch marks a big step toward what the final version should feel like.
