Path of Exile 2 has had its ups and downs, but the newest season, The Third Edict, is finally doing something right. Even without a new class—which many players had been hoping for—the update has landed well with veterans who've stuck around through every patch, broken build, and botched loot table.
Since the season kicked off on August 29, the game has seen a strong wave of returning players. Peak times still push over 220,000 players on Steam, which is impressive considering where things were just a few months ago.
So what changed?
Instead of dropping a new class or reworking the entire skill system, the devs focused on making things that already exist actually work better. Trading has been cleaned up. Crafting feels worth engaging in more than ever. The seasonal mechanic has a clear role without being overly complicated. Even the story feels more connected.
For fans of the series, those things matter more than a headline feature. The last season had problems, especially with loot, but The Third Edict seems to have cleaned up a lot of the mess.
On Reddit, players are saying exactly that. Many skipped version 0.2 entirely, but with version 0.3 they've come back and are actually playing again, and they're praising the loot and crafting system. The Abyss content has some issues with bugs and performance, but the core systems feel like they're improving.
One big ask remains, though: mid-season balance changes.
Veteran players are pointing out that a lot of builds still feel underpowered. You can tell the intent was to allow for more endgame build variety, but a lot of that potential is stuck behind balance issues. Players want to be able to roll a second or third character during the league without feeling like they've signed up for frustration. Still, it's not a big deal, since most of the major frustrations have already been solved.
The only real downside right now is performance. Crashes, frame drops, and some weird bugs are still hanging around, especially during heavier combat. It's not game-breaking, but it's annoying enough that players mention it every time the topic comes up.
Even so, The Third Edict has fixed the main concerns of the game. It's not trying to reinvent the game. It just tightens things up where they were loose and finally gives players a smoother experience.
If a mid-league patch actually hits and helps open up more builds, then Path of Exile 2 could be in the best place it's been since launch.
