The ninth Diablo 2: Resurrected Ladder season is here, and it’s time to build your character from scratch. This guide is tailored to help new and returning players navigate through Normal difficulty, setting the stage for a smooth progression into Nightmare and Hell difficulties in future guides.
Which Character to Pick for a Ladder Start?
The answer is simple: Spellcasters.
Spellcasters such as Cold Sorceress, Fire Sorceress, Fire Elemental Druid, and Blessed Hammer Paladin are exceptional choices for the ladder start due to their ability to clear content quickly and gear efficiently. While other builds like Lightning Sorceress or Javazon are strong, they require some extra gear to be fully efficient.
In this guide, we’ll primarily focus on the Cold Sorceress, thanks to her synergy with the new Sundered Charms, which break cold immunity in higher difficulties. Although these charms are only obtainable in Terrorized Zones on Hell difficulty, the Cold Sorceress remains a solid pick for Normal difficulty as she transitions from Fire skills to Cold spells.
The Basics of Normal Difficulty
Gear Preparation and Early Priorities:
Runewords: Early Runewords provide powerful stat boosts at minimal cost:
Stealth (Tal + Eth) - Great for faster cast rate and movement speed.
Nadir (Nef + Tir) - Useful for utility early on.
Leaf (Tir + Ral) - Ideal for our early Fire Sorceress with its +3 to Fire Skills.
Socketed Gear
Look out for these socketed items early on, as they serve as the foundation for the 3 main Runewords:
2 socket Staves: Perfect for creating the Leaf Runeword.
2 socket Helms: Used to craft the Nadir Runeword.
2 socket Body Armor: Enables the Stealth Runeword.
Ethereal Gear: Save ethereal items for your mercenary as they take no durability damage.
Skill Adjustments and Points: Completing the Den of Evil quest grants a reward that lets you reset your stat and skill points, enabling you to reallocate them as you transition from Fire to Cold spells. This flexibility is invaluable for keeping your build optimized as you advance through the game.
Now that you know which character to choose and what to prioritize, let’s break down the acts step by step.
Act 1: The Foundation
Den of Evil: Gain a one-time opportunity to reset your skill and stat points at Akara, allowing you to rebuild your Fire Sorceress into a Cold Sorceress later.
Blood Raven: Recruit a mercenary to aid you.
The Countess: Farm her in the Forgotten Tower for key runes like Tal, Eth, Tir, and Ral to craft essential early-game Runewords.
Andariel: Consider farming Andariel for early magic find gear like Nagelring and other rare items. Don’t forget to bring some antidote potion with you.
Act 2: Horadric Cube and Mercenary Upgrades
Act 2 introduces the Horadric Cube, which becomes essential for crafting, upgrading runes, and combining gems.
The Sewers: Complete the quest for a free skill point.
The Horadric Staff: Gather the staff and amulet pieces to unlock the next areas.
Arcane Sanctuary: Focus on defeating Spirits along the path, as they have a higher chance of dropping runes.
Duriel: Keep a town portal ready, kite to minimize damage, and equip your mercenary with ethereal gear to help tank for you.
Act 3: Push Through Quickly
Act 3 is grindy, but you can speed run/teleport through it with minimal farming.
Travincal: Defeat the Council and smash the orb with the flail to advance.
Mephisto: One of the tougher bosses in Normal difficulty. Make sure to gear up with resistance items.
Act 4: Boss Rush
Act 4 is straightforward, focusing on quick boss kills.
Izual: Grants two free skill points upon defeat.
Smash the Soulstone: The gems and runes you receive from breaking Mephisto’s Soulstone are useful for upgrading and crafting gear.
Diablo: Break the seals and defeat the Lord of Terror. Be prepared for his high-damage attacks; run/teleport away from them.
Act 5: The Final
By Act 5, your Sorceress should fully transition to Cold spells, utilizing Akara’s stat and skill reset along with the support of early Runewords.
Shenk: Complete his quest and save Larzuk's socketing reward for key items like a Crystal Sword (for Spirit) or valuable Uniques later.
The Ancients: Place Town Portals strategically before entering the Ancients' Way for a backup if you die.
Baal: Blizzard will make quick work of his minions, but patience is essential when dealing with Baal and his clone.
Congratulations on completing Normal difficulty!
