Diablo 2 Resurrected Surpasses Diablo 3 in Popularity

2025.03.11

Blizzard’s Diablo 2 Resurrected has proven to be more than just a nostalgia-driven remake. Despite being based on a game that originally launched over two decades ago, it has now surpassed Diablo 3 in player numbers. This shift marks a significant moment for the franchise as fans continue to gravitate toward the remastered classic.

Rod Fergusson, the head of the franchise, shared this information in a recent interview. According to him, more players are currently engaged with Diablo 2 Resurrected than with Diablo 3. Given that the latter has been around for thirteen years and has maintained an active player base, this development highlights the lasting appeal of the second game’s design.

One of the main reasons behind this resurgence is the faithful recreation of the original experience. Diablo 2 Resurrected retains the core mechanics that made the original a genre-defining title while modernizing the visuals and performance. Longtime fans appreciate the authenticity, and new players have an opportunity to experience a game that set the standard for action RPGs.
Fergusson emphasized that despite complaints about Diablo 4’s balancing and itemization, most players have transitioned to the latest entry. Seasonal updates bring fresh content, new abilities, and engaging stories that keep players invested. The recent expansion, Vessel of Hatred, also contributed to the game’s ongoing success. When it launched, a significant percentage of the player base opted to play as Spiritborn, the expansion’s exclusive class. This engagement reflects the anticipation surrounding new content and how well players respond to meaningful updates.

Even with these changes, the franchise is moving forward. Diablo 4 is making adjustments to pacing and itemization based on community feedback. Blizzard has also decided to space out expansions instead of releasing them every year. While this means a longer wait for new content, it allows for more refined updates. With ongoing support and improvements, Diablo 4 remains the most played game in the series.

The ongoing popularity of Diablo 2 Resurrected is a testament to the game’s quality. Fans continue to praise its deep progression systems and rewarding gameplay loop. While newer entries in the franchise experiment with different mechanics and approaches, many still view the second game as the pinnacle of the series. Even industry veterans, such as designer David Brevik, have expressed the opinion that Diablo 2 remains the best action RPG ever made.

Blizzard also plans to address player concerns regarding Diablo 4’s speed-focused playstyle. The studio recently stated that it will focus less on players who rush through content and instead cater to those who engage with the game’s systems more methodically. This shift in philosophy may influence future updates, leading to adjustments that favor a more rewarding progression system.
As the franchise evolves, it is clear that every installment has its place in the community. Diablo 2 Resurrected thrives because of its timeless gameplay and dedicated fanbase. Diablo 4 pushes the series forward with new mechanics and expanding content. Despite the differences between the titles, both continue to attract and retain players. The Diablo series remains one of the most influential in gaming, with each entry leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
