Let’s be real — Diablo II: Resurrected is kind of crushing it right now. More people are playing it than Diablo III, and honestly, that doesn’t surprise me at all. It just feels better. It plays better. And more than anything, it actually looks and sounds like Diablo should.
D3 had its moment. It’s fun, no doubt. It’s smooth, fast, and colorful, and the combat feels nice, but it never really felt like Diablo to me. Too bright, too light, almost cartoonish in some places. D2R, on the other hand, nailed the tone. It’s dark, moody, and brutal. You feel like you're in a cursed world, not just speed-running rifts for loot explosions.
And yeah, I get it, D3 was built for a different kind of player, and it brought a lot of people into the series. But now that D2R is doing so well, you can see that there’s still a huge group of us who prefer the slower, more methodical gameplay, the atmosphere, and that satisfying grind that actually feels earned.
So here's the thing. If Blizzard ever decides to do a Diablo III remaster, it has to learn from what made D2R work. It can’t just be a texture upgrade or sharper colors. That won’t cut it. They’d need to rethink the tone, the lighting, maybe even parts of the UI. Give it a darker feel. Make the world feel heavy and cursed again. Something that hits more like Tristram than Saturday morning fantasy.
A D3 remaster that looks like D2R, with grimmer visuals, better sound design, and maybe even tweaks to how loot drops or how seasons work, could actually bring back a lot of players. But if it keeps the bright colors, glowing armor, and arcade-style pacing, it’s just not going to work. It’ll look out of place next to the rest of the franchise, especially now that Diablo IV has moved back toward a more grounded, darker vibe.
D2R proves that fans still want that kind of Diablo. Something with weight. With consequence. Where a rare drop actually makes you stop and think. Where every fight feels like it could go sideways if you're not paying attention.
So yeah, props to Diablo II: Resurrected for climbing back up and reminding people what this series is all about. And if D3’s ever getting a second shot, it better take notes. Otherwise, it’s just going to be left behind again.
