Path of Exile's Keepers of the Flame update does more than bring back Breach. It pushes the game forward with new skill gems, strange new PoE items, and fresh ways to grow power through the Genesis Tree and grafts. For anyone who farms PoE currency or chases rare uniques, this is the league to play.
The core of the league still revolves around Ailith and the fight against the Breachlords, but the new tools matter just as much as the story. Breach encounters now feed the Genesis Tree, which is a special Atlas-like system that grows as you clear hands and hives. Each run gives graftblood and loot, and that blood can be poured into different branches of the tree. Some branches focus on PoE Currency, some on equipment, and some on Foulborn uniques or grafts. The result is simple: the more time you spend in Breach content, the more targeted your rewards become, instead of only praying for random drops.
New skill gems help builds feel fresh again. Conflagration and Thunderstorm give bow users new ways to control space, raining damage into marked areas instead of just firing straight lines. Somatic Shell lets you fire a projectile that tags an enemy with a barrier that soaks hits, then explodes and sends out another shot. Kinetic Rain and Kinetic Fusillade turn wands into real map-clearing tools, filling the screen with falling projectiles and kinetic anomalies that seek out targets. Wall of Force adds a clever twist by letting projectiles chain off a wall you create, so smart placement can multiply hits on bosses. Support gems such as Windburst and Living Lightning sit behind many of these setups, adding storms of extra hits or lightning summons that jump between enemies. Together, they give wand and lightning builds a huge bump in variety and damage.
On the PoE item side, Keepers of the Flame goes hard with Foulborn gear and new currencies. Foulborn uniques are mutated versions of classic items, grown in the Genesis Tree instead of just dropping normally. A Foulborn Goldrim, for example, keeps its role as an early resistance helmet but can gain a huge chunk of chaos resistance, turning a leveling piece into real endgame defense. Foulborn Xoph's Blood can mix Avatar of Fire with other offensive effects in ways that open new fire builds instead of the same old archetypes. Bows like Foulborn Quill Rain gain strange mana rules that change how bow skills spend resources and open up low-mana, low-reservation setups. These twists make old names feel new again and give build makers more toys than a simple stat bump ever could.
New PoE orb types have also been introduced with the league. Foulborn Orb of Augmentation, Foulborn Regal Orb, and Foulborn Exalted Orb work like upgraded versions of their normal cousins, but their modifier weighting leans toward higher-level mods. Used on the right base, a single Foulborn Poe orb can turn a plain rare into a serious upgrade for mapping or bossing. They are not meant for every item, but when you find a strong base on the Genesis Tree or in a Breach Hive, they become powerful craft tools instead of just curiosities you stash and forget.
Grafts add another layer on top. These are special items that you effectively bolt into your character, giving passive stats or even new skills such as Battering grafts that slam the ground or Squalling grafts that summon dangerous storms. Grafts can be upgraded with implant-style currencies that only exist within the Genesis system. That means a big part of late-league crafting now happens on the Tree, not only at a bench or through regular PoE orbs. Wombgifts support the whole cycle: you plant them into special sockets on the Tree, feed them graftblood, and they “grow” into equipment, currency, unique items, or grafts. With the right passive nodes, you can tilt the whole process toward PoE Divine Orbs, high-tier PoE items, or more Foulborn rolls.
And this is just a slice of the new league. There are plenty of new additions, including async trade and the new Bloodline Ascendancy, which you can read more about in our other blog posts. The Keepers of the Flame league has only just begun, but there are already huge discussions and tons of theorycrafting, and the entire ARPG world is buzzing about the new PoE league.
