Path of Exile's latest expansion, Keepers of the Flame, quietly added one of the most interesting mechanics the game has had in years: Bloodline Ascendancies. Instead of just picking a regular Ascendancy class and sticking with it, players can now absorb powers from defeated bosses and combine them with their existing build. It's a simple idea, but it opens up a ton of possibilities.
Here's how it works: when you beat certain endgame bosses, you unlock their Bloodline. That Bloodline becomes a kind of secondary Ascendancy tree, and you can spend points there just like you would with your regular one. The fun part is that you don't have to replace your main class; your character just gets some extra goodies. A Juggernaut can borrow tricks from chaos-themed bosses, or a Necromancer can add bonuses that have nothing to do with minions, and so on.
There are 6 New Bloodlines:
- Farrul Bloodline
- Lycia Bloodline
- Delirious Bloodline
- Catarina Bloodline
- Aul Bloodline
- Olroth Bloodline
Each Bloodline is like a little snapshot of the boss it came from. Farrul's line, for example, is all about aggression and speed: faster Warcries, harder hits, and a bit of minion power on top. Lycia's bloodline is based on chaos magic, which makes Herald effects stronger and adds more raw chaos damage. Then there's Delirious, which is a perfect name for it. It helps you get over debuffs faster, lowers cooldowns, and gives you a little bit of self-sustain. It's great for players who like to live on the edge but not die for it.
Catarina's Bloodline is an obvious pick for summoners, with bonuses to minion life, spell damage, and cast speed. Aul's is more defensive, boosting aura effects and global defenses. Last but not least, Olroth's Bloodline concentrates on Ward mechanics, enhancing Ward strength and recovery. This is a welcome addition for any player whose build relies on the ward system.
What makes this whole setup fun is that none of these Bloodlines are locked to a specific class. You can mix them however you want. It's like someone handed you a box of broken boss powers and said, “Go wild.”
It also changes the way you approach the endgame. Bosses aren't just loot piñatas anymore; they're potential upgrades. Beating one could literally change how your PoE build plays. The more you experiment, the more unique your character becomes.
The system isn't overcomplicated either. You just defeat the boss, unlock its Bloodline, and start spending points. It's the kind of feature that rewards exploration without forcing a reset or a new character.
It's still early days, but players are already sharing wild builds online: chaos tanks that borrow from Lycia, melee summoners powered by Farrul, and hybrids that would've never worked before. The creativity is exactly what keeps Path of Exile interesting after all these years.
At its core, Keepers of the Flame is the PoE league that invented something new. The Bloodline system is a proper evolution of character building. It makes the game more creative, and it's exactly the system that ARPG players search for.
