After a rocky league start last season, Path of Exile fans have reason to breathe easier heading into the launch of Keepers of the Flame on October 31. In an interview with MeinMMO, Game Director Mark Roberts confirmed that the server issues plaguing the last release have been fully addressed and that Grinding Gear Games went all-in to make sure they don't happen again.
The Problem That Broke the Launch
When the last season went live, the game's servers were hit hard. Players struggled to connect, suffered constant disconnects, and saw heavy lag during what should've been the most exciting weekend of the league. At first, the studio believed it was simply a case of too many players flooding in at once. But as Roberts explains, it turned out to be more than that. Hackers were bombarding the servers with fake connection requests, which choked the system and created the same symptoms as an overloaded server.
Fixing It Took “Absurd Amounts of Resources”
Roberts admitted the issue wasn't an easy fix. “We threw absurd amounts of resources at the problem to solve it,” he said. The team built stronger protections specifically designed to block this kind of attack before it can disrupt live gameplay. That meant infrastructural upgrades, system monitoring, and more defensive tools. With the system update, PoE will be able to handle a massive number of real players as well as any malicious traffic, Roberts explained.
He was clear that the solution wasn't just about adding more servers; it was about changing the whole network defense design.
How Secure Are the Servers Now?
According to Roberts, Path of Exile is now “much better protected” against similar DDoS attempts. The studio learned from the chaos of the last launch and has expanded its defenses far beyond what was in place before.
Still, he was realistic: no system is completely invincible. “There's no such thing as 100% security,” he noted, especially during major launches where both legitimate player load and malicious activity peak at the same time. But this time, the team feels confident and ready.
Looking Ahead to “Keepers of the Flame”
With these upgrades in place, Roberts expects the upcoming league to launch far smoother than the last one. Players can look forward to starting strong without the frustration of disconnects or login errors.
The new season, Keepers of the Flame, goes live October 31, 2025, and the studio seems determined to make it one of the most stable launches in the game's history. After months of behind-the-scenes work and what Roberts called “absurd” investment into protection, Path of Exile appears finally ready to leave its server nightmare behind.
