Every now and then, a mod shows up that doesn't just tweak a game; it completely transforms it. Path of Terraria is one of those rare creations. It doesn't just build on Terraria. It reshapes it into something entirely new: a full-blown ARPG with layered systems, a full story, character progression, endgame mapping, and loot mechanics inspired by Path of Exile.
The mod comes from ScottieKnowz, who's been working on it behind the scenes for a while. Until now, access was limited to a private Discord testing group. That's about to change. An open beta is dropping August 8, and from everything shown so far, it looks like a serious contender to stand beside heavyweights like Thorium or Calamity in the modding scene.
What makes it different? Everything. You don't just spawn in and dig around for ores anymore. Instead, you choose from one of four classes: melee, ranged, magic, or summoner. Each class has its own mentor NPC in the starting town of Ravencrest. Quests, skill upgrades, and storylines start right there.
You level up by fighting and completing missions. Each level gives points to spend in a passive skill tree that's surprisingly deep, though not quite the maze PoE players are used to. Still, there's more than enough flexibility to build around a specific playstyle or create hybrid builds. Every active skill also comes with its own upgrade tree, letting you shape how it behaves: more damage, different effects, or even full mechanical changes.
Gear drops have been completely overhauled. Weapons, armor, and accessories roll with affixes, just like a proper loot-based ARPG. You'll see commons, rares, uniques, all of it. There's even a crafting system with shard-based currency. One item, the Echoing Shard, lets you clone an item to preserve its current stats before risking a new roll. Sound familiar? It should. It's a clear nod to the PoE Mirror of Kalandra.
Boss fights are no longer just a matter of summoning something and swinging at it. You're pulled into a dedicated boss arena, where you get a set number of lives (based on how many people are in your party), and you have to win before you run out. It's much closer to an instanced encounter in an ARPG than a sandbox brawl.
Once you've progressed far enough, the endgame opens up in the form of PoE map-like zones. Each map has random modifiers, enemy layouts, and loot bonuses. They're rerollable too, just like in PoE. That alone gives the mod real replay value, especially for players who enjoy pushing builds and farming rare drops.
If you prefer to play alone, Path of Terraria supports solo completely. But for players looking for a bit more competition and trading, there's also Path of Terraria Online. That version adds a leaderboard system, so you can track your progress against others, and a trading feature that lets you list items for sale in exchange for crafting currency.
The mod launches its open beta on August 8. Until then, ScottieKnowz has closed off new invites to the private test phase, but you can still follow development on the official site or the Discord server.
There are plenty of Terraria mods out there, but Path of Terraria stands head and shoulders above the rest. It changes gameplay and brings in structure, depth, and progression systems that feel like they belong in a full ARPG, and somehow, it all fits inside the world of Terraria.
If you've ever wanted to mix the gear grind of Path of Exile with the sandbox charm of Terraria, this game might be exactly what you've been waiting for.
