Blizzard has revived hardcore characters

2025.03.29

World of Warcraft Classic’s Hardcore mode has always appealed to a very specific kind of player. The format offers no second chances, which turns every decision, fight, and dungeon pull into something far more intense than in standard gameplay. Even though most players avoid hardcore mode due to its difficulty and time demands, streamers are drawn to it. The streamer-only guild called OnlyFangs is no exception, and it was with them that a case of unprecedented value took place.

After months of hard work, OnlyFangs finally reached its ultimate objective, a full-scale raid with 40 men in the feared Hardcore mode. The group had started entirely from scratch, leveling fresh characters under the permanent death rules of Hardcore servers. Their journey took five months of grinding, coordination, and the ever-existing risk of death. Recently, the guild was finally pushing into Blackwing Lair, which is the most difficult raid currently available in Classic Hardcore. But during one of their encounters, a disaster happened.

While fighting a boss, players began disconnecting. One after another, raid members dropped from the server, and they were unable to log back in. When the dust settled, more than a dozen characters had perished. Sodapoppin, a popular streamer and the leader of the guild, later explained that they had been targeted by a DDoS attack. He announced that the guild will disband for this season because several key characters have died due to the DDoS attack. The preparation required for hardcore raids had already worn many members thin, and with the looming threat of more attacks, continuing no longer seemed worth the time and energy.

Despite the frustration, there was still a sliver of hope. Sodapoppin mentioned that the guild might return if Blizzard decided to restore the lost characters, though he doubted such a move would happen. In Hardcore WoW, death has always been permanent, regardless of the cause.
Then, something unexpected occurred. A Blizzard community manager posted on the official forums, confirming that the team had identified a series of large-scale DDoS attacks that affected multiple services, including Hardcore servers. These attacks, according to the statement, were specifically designed to disrupt the gameplay experience of others. In response, Blizzard announced a rare exception: characters lost during those attacks would be revived.

The company explained that it viewed this type of incident differently from the usual ways players might die in Hardcore. DDoS attacks are not bugs or bad luck; they are deliberate, malicious actions from outside the game. Because of the targeted nature of the attacks, Blizzard decided it was appropriate to bring back the affected characters. The statement emphasized that the choice was made based on internal discretion and did not signal a change to the permanent death rule overall.
The community had conflicting opinions about Blizzard's decision. The return of Hardcore characters is seen by many WoW players as going against the essence of the HC mode. They believe that Blizzard was favoring well-known streamers who contribute to the game's popularity and attention. On the other hand, others welcomed the move, seeing it as a fair correction after an unfair situation.
Blizzard clarified it that the decision applied only to characters lost during the confirmed attack and that connection issues, in-game bugs, or crashes would still result in permanent character loss. The rules of Hardcore mode will stay unchanged for all other cases.

The OnlyFangs guild, once seemingly finished, may now continue their raiding thanks to this rare intervention. The incident highlights both the fragility and strength of the Hardcore mode, where effort can be lost in a heartbeat but where shared passion continues to push players toward near-impossible goals.

What’s your opinion on restoring characters in a situation like this? Is it fair, or should characters not be restored even if they died through no fault of the player?
