Blizzard chose Gamescom Opening Night Live to give fans their first real look at World of Warcraft: Midnight, the MMO's next expansion. True to tradition, the reveal came in the form of a cinematic trailer, the kind of lavish production Blizzard has built its reputation on.
The video takes players back to Quel'Thalas, the homeland of the Blood Elves. It's a place many haven't thought about since The Burning Crusade, when it served as a Horde starting zone and the setting for the Sunwell raid. In Midnight, the region becomes the main stage once again, only this time under siege by the Void. Xal'atath leads an army determined to claim the Sunwell's power, and the trailer paints a grim picture of Silvermoon as shadows close in.
The expansion is the second part of the Wordsoul Saga, a three-part storyline being steered by Chris Metzen, who returned to Blizzard in 2023 after years away. The first chapter, The War Within, arrived in 2024 and was well received, laying the groundwork for a story that now leans heavily into the cosmic struggle between light and dark.
Gamescom isn't stopping at the trailer. Blizzard is using the show to spotlight Midnight with developer panels covering lore, new zones, and gameplay updates. One highlight will be the hands-on demo for player housing, a feature fans have asked about for more than a decade and which was confirmed last year. Those not in Cologne will still be able to watch the panels online once they wrap.
Blizzard is also hosting a cosplay contest at the convention, bringing a touch of BlizzCon energy to the show, even as it takes place within Gamescom's packed schedule.
For longtime players, the return to Quel'Thalas feels like a callback to one of the most iconic settings in Warcraft's history. But the trailer isn't just for them, as it clearly shows new players what they can expect in this new world. Midnight looks set to be a pivotal chapter for the game as it moves deeper into its third decade.
