WoW Midnight Expansion Finally Delivers on a 20-Year Promise

2025.05.19

After nearly two decades of requests and speculation, World of Warcraft is finally introducing a long-awaited feature that many players have dreamed about since the earliest days in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. With the upcoming Midnight expansion, Blizzard is adding proper permanent, in-game homes that can be customized, decorated, and even visited by others.

This new addition goes far beyond temporary solutions like Garrisons from Warlords of Draenor. That earlier system, while ambitious at the time, lacked the depth and freedom players wanted. Now, after years of feedback and reflection, the team behind WoW is finally ready to deliver something more meaningful. According to the early details, these homes won’t just be cosmetic spaces but will reflect each player's personal journey through the world of Azeroth.

The housing system will tie deeply into the existing achievement system. Players who have spent years conquering raids, winning PvP battles, and exploring every corner of the map will find their progress rewarded with trophies, exclusive decorations, and rare cosmetic pieces. A warrior who faced Onyxia at level 60 may one day mount her skull above their virtual fireplace. Veterans of battlegrounds or Mythic+ dungeons might unlock gear or banners that only seasoned adventurers can display.

On top of achievement-based rewards, regular furniture and simpler items will also be available from vendors across the world. Professions will play a large role as well. Blacksmiths can craft metal furniture and decor, while Enchanters may create magically imbued pieces that glow or shimmer. Almost every in-game activity will offer a way to earn housing items, which matches Blizzard’s new design goal: rewarding players for time spent anywhere in the world.

There are limits, though. Unlike the transmogrification system, where, once unlocked, appearances become permanent account-wide cosmetics, player housing items will be finite and physical. If a player earns four identical chairs and places three of them in one character’s home, only one will remain for use in another character’s space. There’s no duplication. And some items will be unique. A trophy like Onyxia’s head will exist as a single object per account, making its placement feel more special. So players will need to think carefully about how they arrange their homes and which character gets what.

The housing feature is expected to arrive with the pre-expansion patch for Midnight, a few weeks before the full expansion launch. While an exact release date has not been confirmed, more details are expected soon. Blizzard is set to appear at PAX East on May 9, where new information about the housing system and the broader Worldsoul Saga storyline may be shared.
In the meantime, players can start planning what their homes might look like and thinking about which memories they want to bring to life. After all the raids, battles, and quests, having a place to rest and decorate feels well deserved.
