EA's football series has entered its second year without the FIFA license, delivering clear improvements on the pitch while making some more debatable choices off it. FC 26 is way more responsive than its predecessor, offering tighter dribbling, sharper passing, and better goalkeeper positioning. Yet for every step forward in gameplay, the new Season Pass system shifts the experience in a different direction, adding marketplace elements even to offline modes.

A Step Forward in Gameplay

Dribbling is where players will notice the biggest leap. The ball clings to the feet in a way that allows small touches to matter, letting you weave through defenses with precision. That added control makes setting up a pass or creating a shooting lane feel more natural than in recent editions. Passing itself has also been refined. You can't just ping pinpoint balls across the field without paying the price anymore. Instead, well-timed and well-positioned passes reward patient build-up play, especially in midfield battles.

Defending, however, has become more punishing. A mistimed tackle will leave your back line exposed, and improved dribbling mechanics only exaggerate those mistakes. Goalkeepers have finally received some much-needed upgrades. They read shooting angles better, push danger away from the box, and feel far more reliable as the last line of defense. The game still favors attacking play, but the new changes have brought more balance.

Two Presets, Two Styles

EA has finally tackled a long-standing issue by splitting gameplay into two presets: Competitive and Authentic. Competitive is tuned for quick online matches, keeping the tempo high with smarter AI. Authentic takes things slower, rewarding patience and tactical awareness. The split allows each community—Career Mode players who want realism and Ultimate Team players chasing balance—to get the version that fits them best. 

The Season Pass Shift

In FC 26 the Season Pass plays a bigger role than before. It no longer applies only to FC 26 Ultimate Team but also shows up in Clubs, Player Career, and Manager Career. Icons and Heroes, like Zola, Klose, and Foudy, are tied to progression, which gives players long-term goals and a reason to try out different modes. The XP requirements can feel demanding if you only stick to Career Mode, but for many it adds an extra layer of challenge and keeps the grind rewarding.

Refreshed Modes

Career Mode has a new Manager Live Hub that drops rotating challenges inspired by real football. It mixes things up and gives you more to aim for than just finishing a season. FC 26 Ultimate Team also gets welcome updates, with tournaments returning and new cosmetic options for Evolutions. Even Clubs, while not changing as much, feels fresher thanks to the new Archetype system, which lets players shape their build after past legends.

Verdict

FC 26 nails the fundamentals where it counts: on the pitch. Matches feel fluid, passing has more weight, and dribbling finally rewards skillful players in a way that feels satisfying. The expanded Season Pass now reaches into nearly every corner of the game, including modes that previously stood apart. For fans willing to embrace this system, this is the strongest entry in years. For others, it may take some adjustment to get used to how progression is structured.
