PoE 3.29 Crafting Bench Changes Explained

2026.08.30

The Crafting Bench has always been one of the most useful tools in Path of Exile because it allows players to finish resistances, add missing attributes, adjust sockets, and improve partially completed rare items. Curse of the Allflame expands that role through several changes that affect both simple equipment upgrades and advanced crafting projects. Two completely new crafts can reroll explicit modifiers on rare items by spending PoE Chaos Orbs, giving players a direct way to alter selected portions of an item without rebuilding the entire piece from the beginning. The Bench is also available in every town from Act 2 onward, which makes crafting easier during campaign levelling. Socket crafting has changed alongside the new 3.29 gem system, with new options that guarantee a minimum number of non-white sockets and the removal of the old individual red, green, and blue socket crafts. Caster weapons receive additional Bench updates through stronger Spell Damage options, Spell Critical Strike Chance changes, new Staff block modifiers, and the removal of several elemental damage suffix crafts. Patch 3.29.2 adds another useful convenience by placing a Crafting Bench inside the Menagerie. Together, these adjustments make the Bench easier to access and more useful across a much wider range of equipment decisions.

Two New Rare PoE Item Reroll Crafts
The largest direct addition comes from two new Crafting Bench options that are unlocked by default. The first craft rerolls three random modifiers on a rare item and costs 3 Chaos Orbs. The second rerolls one random modifier and costs 8 Path of Exile Chaos Orbs. These crafts give players a new way to modify existing rare equipment while preserving part of the item. A rare item with several strong affixes and one poor modifier can become a candidate for the single-modifier reroll. The three-modifier version carries greater uncertainty because a larger portion of the item can change, although its lower price makes it accessible for more frequent use. Both options create useful middle-ground crafting opportunities for items that already contain valuable stats. A weapon with strong physical prefixes and several poor secondary modifiers may deserve further work. Armour with good Life and Resistances can also become interesting when one or more unwanted affixes reduce its usefulness. The new options are especially relevant during early and mid-league periods, when players often use rare items that contain a mix of strong and mediocre modifiers. The Bench can now improve some of those items through a direct Chaos Orb craft.

How the Three Modifier Reroll Works
The 3 Chaos Orb craft rerolls three random modifiers on a rare item. The randomness is the defining part of this option because the player does not select which three affixes will change. An item with six explicit modifiers therefore exposes half of its existing affix structure to the craft. This creates meaningful risk on equipment that already contains several valuable stats. The craft becomes more attractive when the item has a small number of highly desirable modifiers and several weaker ones. For example, a rare helmet with an excellent Life roll and one strong Resistance may still contain several modifiers that provide little value to the build. A three-modifier reroll can potentially transform the remaining affixes while preserving the important ones if the random selection works in the player's favour. The low 3 Chaos Orb price also allows repeated experimentation on affordable bases. High-value equipment requires greater caution because the craft can select premium modifiers for replacement. Players should inspect every explicit affix before using it and estimate how many existing stats they are willing to lose. This craft works best when several current modifiers already qualify as replaceable and the item has enough underlying value to justify further investment.

When the Single Modifier Reroll Is Useful
The 8 Chaos Orb option rerolls one random modifier on a rare item. Since only one explicit modifier changes, the item retains far more of its original identity after each use. The price is higher because this narrower modification can be significantly more useful on equipment that already contains several strong affixes. Consider a rare pair of boots with high Life, strong movement speed, two useful Resistances, and one weak modifier. A single-modifier reroll creates a chance to replace one affix while preserving the remaining structure. The random selection still creates risk because the Bench can choose any eligible modifier. This means the craft works best when the overall distribution of acceptable outcomes is favourable. An item with five excellent modifiers and one bad modifier provides a low chance of improving through a random selection. An item with three strong modifiers and three weak ones presents a much more attractive probability. Players can evaluate this craft through simple risk assessment. Count the modifiers that you would accept losing, compare them with the number of modifiers that must remain untouched, and decide if the 8 Chaos Orb cost supports the expected outcome. The option is especially useful for medium-value rares that are close to becoming strong upgrades.

Crafting Benches Are Available in Towns From Act 2
Path of Exile 3.29 places a Crafting Bench in every town from Act 2 onward. This small convenience has a large effect during campaign levelling because players can modify equipment without returning to the hideout. A newly acquired rare item can receive Life, Resistances, attributes, damage, or another available crafted modifier immediately while the character continues through the acts. This is especially useful when an equipment swap removes an important Resistance value or leaves the character short of an attribute requirement. Levelling characters change equipment frequently, so easy access to the Bench reduces the amount of travel between towns and hideouts. It also makes Bench crafting easier for players who have recently entered a new league and have only basic hideout setups. The same convenience applies to socket-related crafting when the available recipes and currency support the desired option. Campaign gear usually needs only one missing stat to become useful, and a nearby Bench allows that gap to be filled quickly. This accessibility makes crafted modifiers a more visible part of normal levelling and encourages players to use simple currency efficiently while moving through the acts.

Socket Colour Crafts Have Been Reworked
The socket overhaul in 3.29 changes the Crafting Bench because equipment sockets now begin from a heavily white-focused system, and coloured sockets provide additional gem Quality when the colour matches the gem. The old Bench options that specifically created red, green, or blue sockets have been removed. New crafts guarantee minimum numbers of non-white sockets. At least two non-white sockets cost 5 Path of Exile Chromatic Orbs, at least three cost 20 Chromatic Orbs, and at least four cost 75 Chromatic Orbs. These options support the new role of socket colour as an optimisation layer. Any gem can function in any socket, so players can use equipment before achieving perfect colours. Coloured sockets become valuable when they match important gems and provide their additional Quality benefit. The Bench therefore helps players increase the number of coloured sockets without targeting a specific colour through the old recipe structure. Item attributes and item level continue to influence which colours appear when sockets roll. Higher item Quality also increases the chance for non-white sockets when Chromatic Orbs are used. This gives players several variables to consider before investing heavily into a finished six-link.

How the New Socket Bench Options Affect Endgame Gear
The new minimum non-white socket crafts create a clearer upgrade path for endgame equipment. A character can first obtain the correct item base, modifiers, sockets, and links, then improve socket colours as a separate finishing step. The 5 Chromatic Orb option offers an inexpensive entry point when two important gems gain strong benefits from matching colours. The 20 Chromatic Orb craft supports builds that want three coloured sockets while keeping investment moderate. The 75 Chromatic Orb option targets high-value equipment where four or more coloured sockets can justify significant spending. Since added sockets that come from Jeweller's Orbs, Tainted Jeweller's Orbs, Orbs of Binding, or Bench socket crafts appear as white, later colour optimisation becomes part of the final item process. Chromatic Orbs have also become rarer in 3.29, which makes efficient use of these Bench options more important. A player should inspect the Quality effect of each Skill Gem and Support Gem before chasing several non-white sockets. Some gems gain substantial value from additional Quality, while others provide smaller gains. Prioritising the most influential gems can reduce the total amount of currency that is required for a strong finished setup.

Staff Crafting Receives New Bench Options
Staff users gain several important Crafting Bench updates through the wider caster weapon changes. Chance to Block Attack Damage and Chance to Block Spell Damage modifiers can now roll on Staves, and corresponding Bench modifiers have been added. This gives staff builds a direct way to add defensive value through crafted block stats. Several offensive Staff modifiers have also been improved. Spell Damage, Fire Damage, Cold Damage, Lightning Damage, and related specialised damage prefixes received higher values across their modifier tiers. Bench versions of relevant modifiers were increased as part of the same update. Staff spell gem level modifiers also gain additional tiers, while specific damage-type spell gem modifiers can reach stronger maximum values. These changes make crafted Staves more flexible for characters that want a combination of offence and defence. A partially completed Staff with strong gem levels can use the Bench to add block, while another base may use a stronger crafted damage modifier to finish its offensive structure. The update fits well with Mana-Infused Staff and other 3.29 mechanics that support Staff-based characters. Crafters should review the new Bench values before following older Staff guides because several recommendations from previous versions now use outdated modifier ranges.

Caster Weapon Bench Modifiers Have Changed
Path of Exile Caster weapons receive another major set of changes that directly affects Bench crafting. Increased Fire, Cold, and Lightning Damage suffix modifiers can no longer roll on caster weapons, and these modifiers can no longer be added through the Crafting Bench. Spell Critical Strike Chance receives improvements, with one-handed caster weapons gaining stronger values across several tiers. Staves receive their own Spell Critical Strike Chance modifiers with higher values than equivalent one-handed options, and related Bench modifiers were increased. Added Damage to Spells prefixes also receive stronger numerical values across caster weapon types. Spell Damage and hybrid Spell Damage with Mana modifiers gain higher values as well. These changes alter how players finish wands, sceptres, daggers, and staves after obtaining strong natural affixes. Older crafting plans that reserve a suffix for crafted elemental damage may need a completely different final modifier. A modern 3.29 plan can use Spell Critical Strike Chance, utility, attributes, Cast Speed, or another available suffix depending on the base and build. The stronger prefix values also raise the ceiling for Bench-finished weapons that lack one premium damage roll. Reviewing current Bench options before buying a crafting base can prevent expensive mistakes.

The Menagerie Now Has Its Own Crafting Bench
Patch 3.29.2 adds a Crafting Bench directly to the Menagerie. This convenience is especially useful because Bestiary crafting often involves several stages of item modification. Players may use a Beastcraft, inspect the resulting item, then need a Bench modifier before performing the next step. Having both systems in the same area reduces unnecessary travel and keeps the crafting process concentrated inside the Menagerie. Talisman crafting has also gained a stronger connection to Bestiary in 3.29, which makes the new Bench location particularly useful during this league. Players who work with Beastcrafting frequently can adjust resistances, attributes, sockets, crafted affixes, or other available modifiers without returning to their hideout between actions. The same advantage applies when testing an item immediately after a Beastcraft. The addition does not introduce unique Menagerie-only Bench recipes. Its value comes from location and convenience. This makes it a quality-of-life feature that experienced crafters may appreciate more than casual users because repeated transitions between Beastcrafting and standard Bench crafting can occur many times during complex item projects.

How the New Reroll Crafts Compare With Regular Chaos Orbs
A regular Chaos Orb rerolls the modifiers on a rare item, which can completely replace the existing affix structure. The new Bench options preserve more of the original item because they target one or three random modifiers. This distinction gives the Bench crafts a specific role when an item already contains valuable affixes. A plain Chaos Orb suits a base where the current modifiers have little value and the player wants an entirely new result. The Bench becomes more attractive when some existing stats deserve to survive. The three-modifier craft can reshape a large section of an item while leaving the remaining modifiers intact. The single-modifier craft creates a smaller change and carries a higher currency price. Players should choose between these tools by evaluating the current rare item first. Count strong modifiers, average modifiers, and modifiers that provide little value. A rare item with almost no desirable affixes has little reason to receive an 8 Chaos Orb single reroll. An item with several usable stats can justify a more controlled attempt. The new options therefore expand Chaos-based crafting by giving players additional choices between a complete reroll and highly specialised advanced methods.

When You Should Use the New Bench Rerolls
The new reroll options work best on items that already have enough value to justify another investment. Early in a league, this may include rare boots with movement speed and strong Life, gloves with useful Resistances and attack modifiers, or weapons with one or two premium offensive rolls. Before using either craft, identify which explicit modifiers are essential. Then count how many affixes you would accept changing. If three or more modifiers are weak, the 3 Chaos Orb craft can offer an attractive attempt. If only a smaller portion of the item is undesirable, the 8 Chaos Orb option provides a narrower modification. High-end crafted PoE items require more caution because random selection can remove an expensive modifier. These Bench options provide no guarantee that a weak affix will be chosen. They also provide no guarantee that the replacement will improve the item. Their value comes from giving partially successful rare items another possible route toward usability. Players who treat the crafts as probability-based tools can identify situations where the risk is reasonable. They are especially useful during gearing phases where a modest improvement can postpone a much more expensive equipment purchase.

Why the 3.29 Crafting Bench Changes Are Worth Understanding
The Crafting Bench now covers a wider range of player needs than it did before Curse of the Allflame. Campaign characters gain immediate access from Act 2 towns, rare items gain new Chaos Orb reroll options, socket crafting supports the redesigned gem system, caster weapon recipes reflect major balance changes, Staff builds gain block crafts, and Bestiary users gain a Bench inside the Menagerie. These updates make crafting more accessible while giving experienced players additional decisions around partially completed equipment. The rare-item rerolls are particularly interesting because they create value for items that sit between obvious vendor trash and expensive finished gear. Socket crafts now support gradual optimisation after a character already has a functional gem setup. Staff and caster weapon changes require players to review older crafting plans, especially when those plans depend on elemental damage suffixes that are no longer available. The Bench therefore plays a role at nearly every stage of a character, from filling an early Resistance gap to finishing a high-value caster weapon. Understanding the current recipe set helps players spend currency more efficiently and avoid relying on crafting methods that belonged to earlier versions of the game.

Key Takeaway
Path of Exile 3.29 significantly expands the practical role of the Crafting Bench. The two headline additions allow players to reroll three random rare-item modifiers for 3 Chaos Orbs or one random modifier for 8 Chaos Orbs, creating new options for equipment that already contains useful affixes. Crafting Benches in every town from Act 2 makes simple gear adjustments much easier during levelling. Socket recipes now support the white-socket system through guaranteed minimum numbers of non-white sockets, while the old recipes for specific red, green, and blue sockets have been removed. Staff characters gain crafted Attack Block and Spell Block options, and several caster weapon Bench modifiers receive updated values alongside the broader 3.29 weapon changes. Elemental damage suffix crafts disappear from caster weapons, which changes how many older weapon crafting plans should be finished. Patch 3.29.2 adds another convenience through a permanent Crafting Bench inside the Menagerie. These updates give players more control over partially completed rare items, easier access to basic crafting, and clearer ways to optimise equipment after the main affix structure is already in place. Learning when to spend Chaos Orbs on the new reroll options and when to preserve PoE currency for another crafting method can make the Bench one of the most useful tools throughout Curse of the Allflame.
