What you may have noticed the skill tree is identical to all classes, the difference being the position of these classes on the starting node. Each character starts at a position aligned with their main attributes. However, this does not mean your path is set in stone, since any node is accessible by any class but they may be farther from their starting point. The Scion who starts in the center of course has a unique way of traversing the tree. Each level you gain grants you one point to spend in this tree with some quests offering a few extra ones. Errors made while creating the tree can be reversed with an Orb of Regret.

The passive skill tree offers different kinds of upgrades to your character build. There are basic nodes offering stat boosts, for example, more health, armor, evasion, melee/spell damage, attack speed, etc. Another type of node is the notables, which grant, as the name suggests, notable improvements to your character from an assortment of passive skills. These nodes are a bit bigger on the skill tree, so they can also serve as a way of navigation.

We should also mention anointments here. This comes from a mechanic called blight. Blights are a tower defense-like encounter that spawns from fungal growths on any map. These encounters award you with at least one oil used for anointing amulets with a specified combination of these oils, for example, three Golden Oil would give the character Whispers of Doom. Anointing an amulet will award players with a notable on the skill tree that doesn't require any points. 

Lastly, let's talk a bit about ascendency skills, the bread and butter of Path of Exile's full builds. This unlocks after the first time a character completes the labyrinth, which awards two ascendancy points per difficulty for a total of eight. Essentially, these are specialed sub-classes within character classes providing substantial improvements to specific play styles. Each character has three ascendencies besides the scion with only one. For example, the witch has an ascendency class called the necromancer themed around controlling the dead and empowering them. This ascendency provides notable enhancements to minion-based builds as well as bonuses to related aura and offering skills.
