How the Rune Craft System Works

2025.05.05

Crafting is a huge part of Last Epoch, and if you want to make the most of it, you’ll need to get familiar with Last Epoch Runes. These consumable materials can have a big impact on your gear, far beyond what Glyphs or Shards can do. Some can enhance an item, others might completely change it, and a few can even break it entirely if luck isn’t on your side.

If you're planning a serious crafting session, here's what you should know about how to get Runes and what each one actually does.

Where to Find Runes in Last Epoch
You can get Last Epoch Runes from just about any loot source in the game, but some areas and enemy types have a noticeably better drop rate. If you're trying to get them, farm:

  • Bosses
  • Elite and Champion enemies
  • Chests and caches
  • Loot Lizards and Nemeses

If you're in the Circle of Fortune, you’ll also get access to prophecies that can directly reward runes after completion.

For more consistent farming, the Monolith of Fates is your best bet. Each Monolith contains a large branching network of Echoes which are small Last Epoch Maps that offer guaranteed rewards. Look for Echoes that specifically say they reward Runes so you don’t waste time on unnecessary runs.

What Each Rune Does
Now that you know where to get them, here’s a breakdown of every Rune and what it does. Some are useful for fine-tuning gear; others are more high-risk, high-reward.

  • Rune of Shattering

Destroys a Last Epoch item and gives you a random number of Affix Shards based on the affixes that were on it.

  • Rune of Removal

Removes a random affix from an item and returns that affix’s shards to your inventory.

  • Rune of Refinement

Rerolls all affix values on the Last Epoch item. Tiers stay the same, but the stat ranges get a full shuffle.

  • Rune of Discovery

Fills all empty affix slots with new random tier 1 affixes. Has a better chance of adding rare ones. Doesn’t cost Forging Potential, but won’t work if the item has none left.

  • Rune of Shaping

Rerolls the item’s implicit stats. Handy if you’re trying to get the best possible base.

  • Rune of Ascendance

Turns the item into a unique or set item of the same type. Won’t work for boss-exclusive drops.

  • Rune of Creation

Makes a duplicate of the item. Both copies will have zero Forging Potential afterward, so make sure the item is already in a good place.

  • Rune of Havoc

Shuffles the tiers of all non-sealed affixes on an Exalted item that has four or more affixes. Doesn't raise or lower the total tier values, just redistributes them.

  • Rune of Redemption

Replaces the Exalted affix with a random one. The tier stays the same.

  • Rune of Weaving

Uses whatever Weaver’s Will or Weaver’s Touch is left on an item to boost affixes. Great if you're working with special Weaver items and want a final push.

Closing Word
Crafting with Last Epoch Runes is a true example of high risk, high reward. Every time you use a Rune to forge or upgrade your gear, you’re taking a chance — and the outcome isn’t always predictable. That’s why it’s important to think carefully before committing valuable items to crafting. Once you modify an item, there’s no going back, so make sure the potential payoff is worth the risk.
To push your gear to the limit, you have to take the risk, but remember, fortune favors the bold.
