Character building in Last Epoch is one of the game’s strongest points. With five base classes and multiple Mastery options for each, plus layers of passives, skills, and item modifiers, there’s a lot of room to shape your playstyle. Picking a Mastery is a big part of that. It defines your character’s identity; it doesn’t matter if you’re going full melee, casting from range, or focusing on summons or traps.
But what if you want to switch things up? Maybe you took one path and later realized it doesn’t quite suit how you want to play. The good news is that you don’t need to start over from scratch. You can change your Mastery on the same character.
To do it, head to the End of Time zone. You’re looking for Chronomancer Lerinne, who stands just below the waypoint. She’s the same NPC you’d use to respec passive points. When you talk to her, choose the option to Respecialize Mastery. A simple menu will pop up showing the two other Masteries that belong to your class. Pick the one you want, and you’ll be shown the gold cost for making the change.
The price isn’t flat; it depends on how many passive points you’ve already invested in your current Mastery and your character level. If you’ve been playing a while and built deep into the tree, expect to pay a fair amount. Nothing outrageous, but not pocket change either.
Once you confirm the switch, all of your passive points are refunded, not just the Mastery ones. That includes the points in your base class. So you'll be starting fresh in the passive tree, and you can reallocate everything however you want. Your gear stays equipped, and none of your skills are lost, but you may want to make changes depending on the direction you're going.
For example, if you’ve been playing a spell-heavy Sorcerer and want to try out the elemental melee style of Spellblade, your current gear might not be the best fit anymore. The same goes for anyone swapping from a ranged build like Marksman to something more close-quarters like Bladedancer.
It’s worth noting that the skills your Mastery unlocks will also change. Each Mastery gives access to a unique ability, and if you've been using the one from your previous spec, it will be removed. The new Mastery ability becomes available instead, and you’ll have to slot it in manually if you want to use it.
This feature has been part of the game for a while now, and it’s a helpful tool, not just for fine-tuning a build that isn’t quite working, but also for trying out new skill combinations without rerolling. You can keep your progress, your gear, and your stash and just explore a different approach.
There’s no penalty for doing it beyond the gold cost and a bit of setup time. If you enjoy experimenting or if you just feel like your current path has hit a wall, it’s an easy way to reset direction without burning hours leveling a new character.
Make sure to double-check your equipment, plan out your new passive route, and keep some gold on hand in case you want to tweak again later. The option’s there whenever you need it, and once you’ve tried it, it’s hard to imagine going back to starting fresh every time.
