Some Last Epoch items feel like they were made for specific builds, and Last Steps of the Living is a perfect example. They are Last Epoch Unique boots designed for characters that rely on Ward or lean into cold-based skills. They won’t show up early, and you won’t just stumble across them in random drops. Tracking them down takes some intention and a bit of grinding, but once you reach the Monolith of Fate, they’re closer than you might think.
Where to Get Them
This Unique Last Epoch item drops from Formosus the Undying, the boss at the end of the Blood, Frost, and Death timeline in the Monolith of Fate. To fight him, you need to complete three specific quest echoes:
- Wengari Battleground
- Occupied Heoborea
- The Lair of Formosus
You unlock each stage by building up Stability, which you earn by running Monolith zones. You’ll need 300 Stability to reach Formosus on the normal timeline, or 800 if you’re running Empowered. The system's pretty straightforward: clear zones, stack Stability, and unlock the boss.
Is it Worth the Effort?
To be honest, it relies on your requirements. They give you solid armor, make you move faster, and help you hold onto your Ward for longer. The Ward Retention part is especially helpful if your build relies on it to stay alive. You don’t have to be running a specific cold-themed setup to get value from them either; they're just a good defensive option for a lot of characters.
If your build already deals cold damage or applies Chill regularly, the extra effects tie in nicely. But even if not, the base stats are good enough to justify using them.
Drop Rate and Farming Tips
The drop rate from Formosus is 50%, which is pretty generous compared to a lot of other Uniques. He can also drop Frozen Eyes of Formosus, but you only get one item per kill, so you’ll need to run him a few times if you’re looking for something specific.
If the boots are all you’re after, the normal timeline is the better choice. Empowered isn’t worth the extra effort for this Last Epoch Item. The fight goes quicker, it takes less Stability to reach the boss, and you can fit in more runs with less grind.
Make sure you bring cold resistance or at least some way to deal with burst damage. Formosus hits hard, and his frost-based attacks can mess you up if you're not ready.
Closing Word
Last Steps of the Living is one of those items that fits into a lot of builds without needing much planning. If you use Ward or just want a good pair of boots with defense and mobility, it’s worth going after. The farm isn’t too bad, the drop rate is decent, and the item actually feels good to use. You may not get them right away, but once you do, they’ll likely stay on your character for a while.
