In the Shadow of Path of Exile 2

2024.11.05

Path of Exile 2 is the most anticipated ARPG since the announcement of Diablo 3, which unfortunately left a lot of players disappointed. There was a long way, almost a decade of development, until POE 2 got to the point where release dates could be discussed. We are going to take a look at how this could work out for GGG if they are trying to keep up with both games in terms of player satisfaction.

The closed beta testing took place in summer 2024, and shortly after we got a release date for November. As we got closer to this date, it was unfortunately pushed back until December. While many players who either played the closed beta or kept up with the latest news said that the game wasn't in the state of full release, hardcore fans were still hoping.

When GGG released an update on the new release date, telling players that they are facing back-end-related issues that they are working on solving, it raised questions about the future of Path of Exile 1. While the initial promise was to keep both games up to date with fresh content and balance changes, the current POE league was about to hit 4 months since its release. The biggest concern was how GGG is going to keep the players around the game while they wait for Path of Exile 2. They came to a decision to reboot Settlers of Kalguur with an economy reset while keeping the original League going. This move raised even more concerns about quality issues and if they can really keep up with both games.

The playerbase is somewhat divided when it comes to this topic. Players expected Path of Exile 2 to be released as per the planned schedule and having a new league around the end of the year. Now with the pushed-back release date, there is not much left to do in POE 1, and there is no new league on the horizon for the year. While the concerns of the players are completely understandable, it's worth nothing that POE was originally developed by a small company that took the leap of faith and raised the stake with pushing Path of Exile 2 with the tremendous time invested into it.

We cannot wait to finally play Path of Exile 2, but we are also looking to have POE 1 kept fresh as the playerbase will mostly split into the two different games. While both games lay on the same foundation, the gameplay flow is a bit different, POE 2 being slower; it's up to GGG if they can cater to the audience of both games.
