Path of Exile Leveling Guide

2022.10.14

Starting in a new league and being freshly introduced to the world of Path of Exile leveling your character can be difficult depending on what you want to play. In this guide, we will offer some tips to make leveling an easier task for players.

Leveling vs Endgame:
Even experienced players can find it challenging to maintain an easy leveling experience, while also trying to spec towards their endgame build. Instead of attempting to make your end-game build function at low levels, in many situations, it makes more sense to level with a tried-and-true leveling skill. In general, it is advisable to select talents that demand passive trees comparable to your ultimate build. In this method, you can skill the majority of the points you actually plan to use for mapping, and any respeccing can be handled by the points earned through the leveling questlines.

Looting:
You should quickly come to terms with the fact that not everything that glitters is gold while looting. To put it simply, for an optimal and efficient experience you should accept that some pieces are not even worth picking up. Some players learn this hard way by spending far too much currency on making an item work. Logically speaking, the best items drop from high-level enemies so during leveling you shouldn't worry too much about your gear. Rings, amulets and belts can have nice combinations worth identifying on lower levels though.

You should also supply yourself with plenty of scrolls of wisdom and portal scrolls. This can be done very effortlessly. One orb of transmutation, which is a very common drop throughout the game is worth 4 scrolls of wisdom at vendors. One portal scroll is worth 3 scrolls of wisdom, so by doing some quick math you can see that this method is very sustainable in the long run.

Also, we highly advise using a loot filter as it can help beginners and veterans as well to identify "worthy" items more easily. This will also help you find 3-4 linked items, that will help you immensely.

Getting gems:
Many core skill gems will be awarded as quest rewards throughout the game. However, these rewards can vary based on your class. For example, Ranger will receive more green gems than int-based classes like witch, who receives mainly blue gems. Early on in the league, you can use a method called muling to get gems required for Act I. You must create a different class than the one you want to play to receive gems from the opening quests. You can start collecting the gems you need in your stash right after a league launches because these quests often only take a few minutes.

If you just got your endgame gems, there is a smart way of leveling them. Just equip two one-handed weapons in your secondary weapon slot, this way you can level 6 gems simultaneously for no cost.

There are some gems you want to avoid leveling, like cast when damage taken support or arcane surge support. This is due to the fact, that leveling these gems also increases their activation threshold, which can act as an actual downgrade in performance. To prevent gems from leveling simply don't level them when the "+" symbol emerges for that gem on the side. You can also turn off the level-up notification by right-clicking on it. If you wish to level that gem in the future you can still do it under your inventory slots. You can also de-level gems by trading the given gem and an orb of scouring at any vendor.

Currencies:
The complicated currency system in Path of Exile is among its most intriguing features. First-time levelers may notice a variety of "Orbs" dropping, ranging from simple Chromatic Orbs to the more elusive Chaos Orbs. You will note right away that each of these orbs has a useful purpose; some of them link sockets, some of them give items additional attributes, and some of them reroll or reforge those properties.

You should keep all of your orbs during leveling, keeping them in your stash. These will not only be used as your means of payment for buying goods from other players in the endgame but many of them will also be required to correctly adjust the gear you acquire.

Maximizing experience:
Many new players try full-clearing every area they come across. This is very inefficient in the early acts, as you will become dangerously over-leveled. Also, low-level monsters don't drop good items, so killing any more than necessary is a waste of time. For the highest efficiency, you should aim to be 2-3 levels lower than the current area, as that is generally the range for the maximum XP rewarded.

There is also chaos damage (as well as chaos resistance), which is a quite rare type of damage that bypasses energy shields. Fortunately, this is balanced knowing that most players only have minimal resistance to chaos damage.

Flasks:
Many new players struggle with the game due to not understanding the importance of flasks. Having a good flask setup will be a great deal of help.

The standard flasks are life and mana flasks. New players tend to stick with these as they seem to be very straightforward in what they offer. However, certain flasks are extremely good while leveling up due to them being imbalanced for lower levels.

The Quicksilver Flask is your most important flask for leveling. You may also want to have 2 of them as it allows you to run past monsters helping you to clear low-level acts much faster.

The Granite Flask gives you a hefty bonus of 3000 armour for its duration. This allows you to walk into a pack of monsters at act IV or V and take virtually no physical damage. Combined with the quicksilver flask you can imagine how effective this can be.

The Silver Flask fits into numerous builds while leveling and grants the Onslaught boost for its duration. Onslaught boosts attack, cast, and movement speeds by 20%, which is useful for doing damage and moving more quickly.
